Introduction
The Mars Exploration Education Program at
the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed and is implementing an Education
and Public Outreach Program aligned with and responsive to NASAs' Education
goals. The
primary focus of this effort is to educate teachers and students with diverse
backgrounds, in a gender sensitive manner, over a wide geographic area of
the United States in grades Kindergarten through 12. The secondary focus
of the effort is to reach and educate the public at large. |
Partnerships
Partnership and synergy are the key concepts
in this Educational Outreach Program. Extensive outreach is achieved through
leveraged resources by: |
University partners
An advisory board of educators and scientists
Curriculum writers
Community organizations
Industry partners
Museums and science centers |
Program Materials and Services
Materials produced and services provided
as a result of this effort include:
Teacher workshops
Students support
Curriculum supplements
Brochures
Models
Movies
Rover telepresence and other experiments
CD-ROM's
Educational TV programs
Slides
Pictures
Challenging problems for problem solving Exercises
Displays at museums |
The goal of providing these extensive materials
and services is to capture the educational communities' and the publics'
interest. Conducting public lectures and town hall discussions with partners
in states around the country gives NASA recognizable voices and familiar
faces. It also very importantly provides people charged with the responsibility
for communicating the Mars Exploration Program stories, who come from and
share the background of the local community. |
